Judge Carolyn Dineen King
Fifth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals
Carolyn Dineen King was born in January 1938 in Syracuse, New York. She earned an undergraduate degree from Smith College and received her law degree from Yale Law School. She practiced law in Houston, Texas, for 18 years.
King was nominated by President Jimmy Carter to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. She was confirmed by the Senate and received her commission in July 1979. She served as Chief Judge for seven years and was the first woman to hold that position. She assumed senior status at the end of 2013.
She is married to another Fifth Circuit Judge, Thomas Morrow Revley.

A three-judge panel of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled unanimously to uphold a federal judge’s ruling last May that a Mississippi law that bans abortion after six weeks of pregnancy could not stand.
Supporters of the six-week ban call them “heartbeat bills” because they make abortion illegal from the time a doctor can detect a fetal heartbeat.
The panel, Judges Carolyn Dineen King, Gregg Costa and James Ho, wrote, “All agree that cardiac activity can be detected well before the fetus is viable. That dooms the law. If a ban on abortion after 15 weeks is unconstitutional [as this same court ruled previously], it follows that a ban on abortion at an earlier stage of pregnancy is also unconstitutional.”
